Golden trout

The golden trout is one of the most mystical species that are very much desired by most anglers. It is a Californian fish that migrated to many parts of the North American continent.

The mountain lakes in Montana, US, allow the golden trout to dwell in great environments with pristine waters. These fishes survive as opportunistic feeders and spawn during the spring, and can be found in streams during July.

It is one of the most beautiful species of fish, owing to the distinctive colors and markings on its body. It has a red streak that embodies the sides of the Golden trout and a golden tail adorned with black spots.

The body’s posterior side has many spots running through the back and the top of the head. With golden yellow upper find and white-tipped dorsal & anal fins, it loses its color when the altitude is low and becomes a brilliant steely blue shade.

Habitat and Lifestyle

The golden trout are natives only to the top of the Kern River basin in Tulare & Kern Counties, California. The trout usually appear in clear and calm waters at an elevation of over 6000 ft.

As they specialize in lake environments in high mountain areas, the golden trout does not pair well with streams and lakes located at low elevations.

In streams and rivers, they feed on both aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, but in lakes, they mostly resort to midges. As natural predators lack in the native range of golden trout, they are usually more active during daytime than other trout species.

Finding and Catching

This fish can be caught from an inflatable boat or kayak.

Golden trout can be found at high altitudes where fly fishers, along with other types of anglers, can lure it. The most effective method of catching the fish is by using midges and caddis flies as bait. Spin casting and jigging can also be utilized with the help of spinners and worms.

Peak Season

Golden Trout requires much luck to catch, but they can be found commonly on island clifftop rivers in March-May and then September-November.
